The Soul Seekers is a paranormal romance set in a small town in 1979. I found this detail intriguing in itself as I began to read about about Emma Shay, an eighteen-year-old who is uprooted from her Colorado home to a small town in Anywhere, USA after the death of her father. The setting and time period give this book a unique ambience, and I enjoyed being transported to an earlier time via the music, cars, and customs of the day.Such circumstances would be trying for anyone that age, but Emma finds life increasingly stressful and mysterious in the backwater where she lives with her mother and grandmother. It's a case of going from the frying pan into the fire as Emma must learn some hard lessons about both life and death.
Along the way, we have a wonderful story of Emma working in a library--nothing fancy--where she finds a rather interesting young man sitting alone every day. It's a romance, so I won't give away much if I say that there is a definite attraction between the two teens, although not an ordinary attraction at all.
But no romance worth reading would not have a competitor for Emma's affections, right? Enter Jesse, a rather forward young man who works at a record store. I found him rather unlikeable at first--a bit too aggressive and rough around the edges--but as Emma gave him a chance, so did I. He genuinely wants to help Emma during this time in her life, and his love for her seems sincere.
The dynamics are in place for a great romance novel, but Saia takes the story to a new level and integrates the tale with the supernatural. There are mysterious breezes at night, a cold coin (possibly magical), and a group of people, The Soul Seekers, that runs an organization aimed at what might be termed spiritual rehab. Who these people are is a deliciously suspenseful part of the plot, and their purpose is not revealed until late in the book, showing that Saia knows both plot and pace.
What makes this story work so well is that Emma is an extremely believable character. It would have been easy to write Emma as an angst-ridden teen smitten with one or more young suitors, but her character has both depth and wisdom that were very realistic. One might say that she is wiser than her years while remaining true to her basic age group, and creating such a protagonist is not an easy task for an author. True, Emma, like her grandmother, has some special paranormal gifts, but even this does not detract from her believability.
This last point brings me back to the best aspect of this novel. It's about learning to grow, learning that there is hope in the very real world of choices, of life and death and risk. Reading of Emma's tenacity as she struggles with the lessons we all have to learn at some point in our lives elevated this story from mere categories such as "romance" or "the supernatural." I cared about Emma and believed in her. In The Soul Seekers, such a realistic main character is definitely worth the price of admission.
This has been called a YA novel. Perhaps it is, but I think, in the final analysis, it's a book for both teens and adults. It's a five-star debut for author Amy Saia.

I really liked this book. It had an original story line that I loved. I would recommend it for people who like science fiction/fantasy.
The author had a way of pulling you into the story. Had all the elements that I enjoy, drama, humor, intrigue and romance. Didn't want it to end.
Anyone over 16 should look into this book. Kept me on the edge of my chair, couldn't wait until it was my reading time. Really enjoyed this story, made me start looking at people differently -)
I can't say enough good things about this story. I actually would love to read more, about how the lovely couple fares in their new lives. This story caught me from the first chapter. And my heart breaks for Jessy's ultimate and selfless sacrifice.
I choose this rating because from the very first page this book had me hooked. And it's rare that a book keeps my attention for the entire story, usually I end up looking interest, but this book had it all...well worth the money and time
I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Soul Seekers. Despite Emma's young age, she was a mature, well developed character. And William was witty and gorgeous. Is highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys an adventure with romance thrown into the mix.
Amy Saia's writing is lyrical, right from the first paragraph the protagonist's father "was granite and crystal gushing rivers and columbine blooming over a hillside." It appeals to all the senses. The setting, small town Indiana, is vividly described, and the characters, ranging from the mundane to the mysterious, are sharply defined. I especially liked William's early appearances in the library and how Emma became fascinated with him. Readers, likewise, will be fascinated with him and will stick with the story to discover his secret---the revelation of which is nicely done.
