First, let me say how breathtaking this cover is. I absolutely love it and it will be one that I will always mention if the topic of book covers is discussed. Now, that that's out of the way, let me get into the book.Going home. Sometimes we look forward to the comfort of the place we grew up. And, other times we don't want to face the past and/or anything or anyone associated with it. Felona falls into the latter category.
Bivins does an excellent job of putting his spin on the age old tale of how childhood wounds follow us into adulthood if they aren't properly dealt with. On the surface, Felona's life looked as if it was going smoothly until she is forced to face her mother and their issues. Sometimes we kid ourselves into thinking closure isn't needed, but in our most important relationships it is and in this complex and intricately written story, Felona finally gets it.
"You know what? I love this woman. We're really good friends. Best friends, actually. We've been through a lot and I'm not going anywhere. Unless she comes with me. So...yeah...that's all I got."
Of course, there's a boy. Well, a childhood friend that has turned into a man and he plays a very important role in helping Felona face everything. He doesn't allow her time back home not to be productive and life-changing. Bivins does an excellent job of providing balance between their friendship and the romantic undertones.
I was unaware of Kenn Bivins until I saw this cover posted on Facebook by one of my book friends. On a complete side note, as a reader ALWAYS share book (covers, quotes, and reviews) stuff on social media and retailer sites because it is truly a BIG help to authors and other readers. Felona's life is one of ups and downs that we get to watch grow and evolve through the final page. I look forward to reading more by Mr. Bivins!!

The story line was okay but it could have been more of a plot. The intense scene with Zoe could have been written with more intensity. Mean acts to her that were delivered by her mother during her childhood should have provided more details. Near the end the transition from her being in the hospital to a trip in Africa to share her story was choppy needed to be smoother. This appeared to be a new writer, with time hopefully her writing skills as an author will develop.
This book was read by my book club, and let me tell you- It was a great read. The story line was interesting and very well developed. The main character Felona is a beautiful young mixed race woman who appears to have everything going for her, but like many women, she has challenges from childhood and young adulthood that have followed her into her adult life. It is a story of love, betrayal, friendship, guilt and grief and so much more. I have truly enjoyed reading this book. As an added benefit, I was able to meet the author who was Awesome. he provided great insight into how the characters developed, and his male perspective of the story line.
The Wedding & Disaster of Felona Mabel is a multilayered themed story about a woman who tries to understand herself, love and relationships all the while knowing that she is a product of a heinous unforgiving crime; rape.
The author Kenn Bivins begs the reader, thru his eloquent writings, to understand the depths of two women both validated by their hurt and pain to ask would you be able to love your own child if he/she were conceived not of love but hate? Would you be able to be able to withstand that truth as a child and understand the meaning of what love should be? Are we destined to be what came before us? Is this our primordial existence? To be what has been without our input? Those questions and more will be what you conjure as you read The Wedding & Disaster of Felona Mabel.
The Wedding & Disaster of Felona Mabel is a well written novel by Kenn Bivins that evokes many emotions from the reader on so many levels. Although, the main theme of the story is heavy, Mr. Bivins showcases his talent in writing by inserting light humor throughout the novel.
I rate this book a 4 out of 5 stars because I would have loved to see certain scenarios/situations more developed and not appear rushed. Because the story is unique and refreshing, it lead to me wanting more details about some of the characters and situations presented.
You will definitely enjoy this beautifully written book about a woman struggling to find love in one self, as all of us do at some point in our lives.
This is my first time reading Kenn Bivins. This book has been on my "TBR" list because the cover was the first thing that captivated me, really. I wasn't sure what to expect, but as I read, I became engrossed in Felona's journey to forgiveness, healing, and true love.This story was more than I could have imagined, and I took a personal journey of my own. There were moments when I wiped tears from my eyes as Felona traveled a road that was rocky, at best. She went through some very traumatic events, but it brought her full circle. I really enjoyed this and want to read more from this talented author.
The Wedding and Disaster of Felona Mabel was such a treat. I love books with home town flair, suspense, and family tension. Felona's train wreck journey with her mom kept me on the edge of my seat. For most of her life, Felona's interactions with her mom were fraught with hatred and verbal abuse. Bivins does an excellent job of slowly unfolding their toxic relationship. Secondary characters, Tobias and Ny, added balance and normalcy to Felona's "crazy" world.
This book has something for everyone plot twists, romance, back-stabbing, and redemption. I recommend this read and look forward to reading other work by Kenn Bivins.
